after some analysis, I seem to like a very specific style of male actor that portrays similar types of characters. The reason why I sat down and took time to consider this was because I watched Pacific Rim today, and was smitten with Raleigh Becket—played by Charlie Hunnam. And then I thought, Wow, he reminds me of several other actors that I really like. Almost like he fit a mold.
So in terms of appearance and the types of characters they play (…but mostly appearance), I am attracted to actors like Chris Pine, Chris Hemsworth, Charlie Hunnam, and Channing Tatum. And maybe Bradley Cooper and Paul Walker.
….Interesting. I see so many similarities between these actors, down to the starting letters of their first names (except two)… It’s their I-have-light-coloured-pretty-eyes-and-chiseled-features-and-thick-eyebrows-and-tanned-skin-and-built-body-and-I-look-best-with-short-hair-and-a-little-scruff nature that immediately put them on my Hollywood radar. I considered adding Hayden Christensen to the list but he doesn’t look scruffy enough and remained looking too boyish since Star Wars.
In terms of appearance and the types of characters they play and general all-around badassery, I strongly admire actors like Hugh Jackman (!!!), Christian Bale, Eric Bana, Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr., and Johnny Depp.
All have that signature dark-haired, dark-eyed, buff, scruffy/manly look, and all tend to play strong male leads. All are married/taken and fatherly and 40+ years old, lol. Why is Tom Cruise not in the list? Hmm…I’m not sure. I never liked him all that much. Great actor, though.
I wonder if I’ll like the blond and light-eyed set of actors when they’re in their forties, because from what I’m starting to notice, that is not the case with the older actors I currently favour. Oh, wait, unless they turn out like Daniel Craig. James Bond badassery.
In terms of authority and cool-headed old-man charisma, I enjoy watching the performances of actors like Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington, and Idris Elba (though he’s still pretty young). I don’t know why, but I seem to find the charisma of older black actors as somewhat more authoritative and respectful.
One of the exceptions to all of these lists is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. His age puts him into the first group but his looks adds him to the second. Maybe that’s why I was a bit surprised that I liked him so much after watching Inception. But then again, I only started liking him after Inception, so… it might have been the influence of his character, Arthur. But he fits badass roles so he should do more of them. I approve of his inclusion in the Batman series.
So apparently, my Hollywood actor preferences are generally quite strict. It’s obvious I have a thing for scruffy faces (but you have to be able to pull it off well). I’m not entirely sure what’s going on with liking younger actors who are blond and blue/green-eyed, and older actors who are dark-haired and dark-eyed, though. I mean…why? Do blond people look better young and dark-haired people look better old? Is it just that the Hollywood selection of actors happens to be catered that way? And what’s up with finding older black men especially charismatic? Fascinating. I will need to analyze this a bit more.
And I forgot to include Matt Damon. He’s a bit like Daniel Craig, in that his looks go into the first category but his age puts him in the second.
